Frequently Asked Questions

What is acne?
Acne is an inflammatory disease resulting from hormones, overactive oil secreting glands and the presence of hair follicles. Often times, severe acne will lead to permanent scarring.

What is BBL?
BBL or broad band light is a pulsed light treatment for skin. There are virtually no side effects and a treatment can be completed in about 15 – 30 minutes.

How does Laser BBL for Acne work?
BBL uses controlled heat to warm the skin beneath the epidermal layer, to treat overactive sebaceous glands, which reduces acne breakout and improves scarring.

Am I a candidate for Laser BBL for Acne?
If you have acne or acne scarring, you are an excellent candidate for laser acne treatments.

What areas does BBL for acne treat?
This treatment is done on areas where acne can occur such as the face, neck, chest and back.

What can I expect during the procedure?

  • You will receive protective googles to protect your eyes from the light.
  • You may feel a warming sensation, but you will be very comfortable throughout the treatment. There is no need for an anesthetic.

What can I expect immediately following the treatment?
You may notice some redness immediately following the procedure which will subside within an hour or so. You will not experience any discomfort following the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?
You will need 6 treatments every two weeks.

What is the recovery period?
There is no downtime or recovery period.

What is collagen and why do I need to replace it?
Collagen occurs naturally in the body and is the main protein component of cartilage, bone and connective tissue. Our skin is supported by a matrix of collagen fibers which help give young skin that smooth look and help it retain elasticity. As we age, collagen levels in the body naturally decrease, leaving your overlaying skin looser and more susceptible to  gravitational pull. When this happens, the result is sagging skin and wrinkles. You will also loose collagen if you spend a great deal of time in the sun without adequate sun protection.

When do I need laser collagen replacement?
When you have experienced loss of elasticity and notice “loose skin” or sagging skin, we strongly recommend this very comfortable and beneficial treatment.

What wrinkles respond to collagen replacement?
The wrinkles that respond to collagen replacement are those formed by loss of elasticity or sagging rather than muscle activity. You will see great improvement if you have these conditions:

  •   Wrinkles caused by the pull of gravity
  •   Loose skin due to the aging process
  •   Crows-feet near your eyes
  •   Sagging cheeks
  •   Vertical lines around the lips
  •   A sagging neck line

Conversely, frown lines and laugh lines require another treatment such as Botox  or Dermal Fillers.

Is Laser Collagen Replacement safe?
Yes, it is very safe. This is a non-ablative collagen repalcement treatment. There is no surgery, needles or anesthesia necessary for this treatment.

What can I expect during the procedure?
During the procedure you may feel a little warmth from the laser, but there is little-to-no real discomfort.

Why should I choose the Sciton Laser Collagen Replacement over other collagen replacement procedures?

  • Each treatment will stimulate cells called fibroblast and new collagen
  • The laser will not damage the surface of your skin
  • A cooling spray is used to cool your skin and protect nerve endings

You are comfortable during the procedure and receive great results.

How long does the treatment take?
It will take about ten minutes.

What is my recovery time?
There is no downtime. If necessary, you may return back to work immediately following your visit.  You may experience slight redness. Should this happen, we will be happy to apply Jane Iredale makeup for coverage and to encourage faster healing, upon your request.

When will I see results?
Results vary depending on age, skin type, skin condition and the number of treatments you have. The best results are achieved with four-five treatments monthly treatments.

How long will my results last?
Collagen treatments can last up to six months. However, with proper maintenance you will enjoy your results much longer.

How do I maintain my results?
For optimum results, you should receive a treatment every three months to maintain your new youthful look.

What are the contra-indications for Laser Collagen Replacement?
If you have an autoimmune disease or are pregnant, you are not a good candidate for Laser Collagen Replacement.

Will my collagen cream work instead?
Unfortunately it will not. Collagen resides in the dermal layer of the skin, which is the second layer beneath the epidermal or top layer. Creams can not penetrate deep enough to effect the dermal layer. You need the warmth from laser to stimulate collagen to restore itself.

What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is an individualized treatment where the hair follicle from which the hair shaft grows is destroyed. Coarse, dark hair responds best to laser hair removal.

Who is a candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
You are a candidate for Laser Hair Removal if:

  • You are interested in treatment for folliculitis which can cause razor bumps.
  • You are interested in smooth skin that is void of hair.
  • You have hair that is darker than you skin color.

Can you treat me for laser hair removal if I have dark skin?
Yes. Our laser will successfully treat people from Ebony to Ivory skintones.

Who would not be a candidate for laser hair removal?

  • You have tanned skin and fair hair. If you are tanned you need to let your tan fade.
  • Light colored hair and red hair does not absorb laser light very easy, therefore it does not respond well.

What should I do to prepare for Laser Hair Removal?

  • Avoid sun tanning
  • Do not shave three days prior to your treatment
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or bleach the area you want treated for approximately 2 weeks before your treatment

What can I expect during the treatment?

  • You will receive protective goggles
  • Your treatment time will vary depending on how big the area is treated, where on the body the treatment is and the type of hair being treated.
  • It is normal to notice an oder of singed hair.

What can I expect after my treatment?
You may have some temporary redness and swelling, but usually there are no other after effects.

How many treatments do I need?
Everyone is different. Hair growth encompasses three stages in a cycle lasting 6 to 8 weeks, of which only one is the growth stage. At any given time only some of your hair is in the growth stage, until the hair has been treated. Generally after about 6 months of regularly spaced treatments you can expect 60 – 95 percent of hair removal. Any subsequent re-growth will probably be hair that is finer and lighter in color.

What are spider veins?
Spider veins are tiny veins that develop on the inside of the skin on the face and legs. They  can be very unsightly, but removing them is easy with the Sciton for Laser Vein Reduction.

How does Laser Vein Reduction work?
Laser light is applied to the skin that is effected by spider veins.  The light makes them shrink and the blood inside the tiny vein coagulates.

Is the treatment painful?
There is some mild discomfort, however, there is no need for a sedative or anesthesia and the treatment is quick.

What can I expect immediately after the treatment?
Immediately after your treatment the treated spider veins will look darker, but over 2-3 weeks they will fade.

There may be some bruising that will fade in about a week. We can apply makeup to the treated area which will allow you the ability to feel comfortable in public after your visit.

How many treatments will I need?
Generally 2 – 4 treatments are required. These treatments are done at three month intervals to eliminate the veins.

What is a microlaser peel?
A microlaser peel is a skin rejuvenation treatment that will smooth and polish your skin, reduce sun damage and increase your skin’s vitality.

What should I do to prepare for the procedure?

  • One month before the procedure you will undergo a skin conditioning program utilizing topical skin conditioning products. This will greatly enhance the outcome of the treatment.
  • The day of the procedure, we will apply a topical anesthetic to make you comfortable during the treatment. The anesthetic will be applied 30 – 60 minutes before we begin.

What can I expect for my recovery time?

  • You will need 3 – 7 days to recover depending on the depth of your treatment and your individual healing time.
  • You may experience redness for 2 days
  • You will be comfortable returning back to work after 4 days.
  • After the treatment you will have significantly less sundamage, however, the fine lines take a bit longer to disappear as collagen restructuring takes several months.

How many treatments will I need?
You will need a series of 4 treatments at three month intervals.

Would a micro laser peel reduce my wrinkles?
A micro laser peel will smooth out lines and tighten your skin.

Will a micro laser peel remove my sun damage?
Yes. The micro laser peel will remove the surface layer of your skin which will stimulate the under layer of skin to produce healthy, new skin cells. Your skin will look younger and healthier afterwards.

How does a micro laser peel compare to microdermabrasion?
The microdermabrasion is very effective for skin rejuvenation. We recommend  the micro laser peel for anyone who would prefer deeper penetration than the microdermabrasion for the treatment of your skin.

Would I be a good candidate for a micro laser peel?
If you are over 18 and do not want a long recovery period, but are looking for noticeable improvement in your sun-damaged skin, the micro laser peel is a good option for you.

Is a micro laser peel painful?
We apply a topical anesthetic and use a cooling device during the procedure, otherwise you will experience a mild burning and pinching sensation.

What is the recovery time of a micro laser peel?
At first it will feel like a mild sunburn. You may have some itching and your skin will flake off. You will use an ointment to protect the skin during this phase of the healing process. After a few days the redness will fade and you can use makeup. A good time to have this procedure is over a long weekend.

What should I do to prepare for the treatment?
Avoid tanning and tanning products

How do I take care of my skin after the treatment?
The best thing to do is avoid unprotected sun exposure.

What is PhotoRejuvenation BBL?
BBL stands for Broad Band Light and is a pulsed light treatment for skin which has  virtually no side effects and can be completed in about 15 – 30 minutes.

Am I a candidate for PhotoRejuvenation BBL?
If you have sun damage or age spots, rosacea, broken capillaries or profuse redness where you look as if you are blushing all of the time; photorejuvenation may be your best and  easiest treatment option.

What areas does PhotoRejuvenation BBL treat?
Most often it is done on skin areas that receive the most sun damage, such as the hands, face, neck, chest and shoulders.

How does it work?
The gentle heat applied by the pulsed light soaks through to the skin layer beneath the surface. It penetrates those cells and stimulates them to produce collagen, which helps your skin revitalize itself.

What can I expect during the procedure?

  • You will receive protective googles to protect your eyes from the light.
  • You will feel your skin becoming warm and you will feel a bit of a snapping sensation.

What can I expect immediately following the treatment?
You may notice some redness immediately following the procedure which will subside within an hour or  so. You will not experience any discomfort following the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?
You will need 3 or 4 treatments.

What is the recovery period?
There is no downtime or recovery period. This is one of the benefits that makes the PhotoRejuvenation BBL so desirable. If you choose, you may apply makeup immediately after the treatment,  or we will be happy to apply makeup for you.
